Sextuor: L’Origine Des Especes

Opera set design

As part of the series Glottalopticon at Space4Art San Diego, the ROMP Ensemble performed Sextuor: L',Origine des Especes, a contemporary opera by composer Georges Aperghis. I worked with the ROMP Ensemble, primarily with Leslie Ann Leytham to design a performative installation in response to the music. The work become the set for the performance of the opera. The installation consisted of 6 posts with large white drawing paper that encircled the audience. Six backlit performers dressed in black wrapped the structure in strands of yarn, embroidered along the bottom edge, and cut holes to allow light through. The result was a womb or a nest like structure that set the tone for the opera surrounding the evolution of all species.
